velutina Common Name: Velvet Ash Flower Color: Greenish (female) or yellow (male) Plant Type: Tree, Perennial, Deciduous Height: To 40 feet (12.2 m) tall Date Observed: April 23, 2005 & September 5, 2004 Notes: These trees are dioecious. The female flowers are followed by one-seeded, winged achenes (samaras) which are shaped like canoe paddles. The green leaves are pinnately compound with usually 5 to 7 lanceolate leaflets. The young leaves are velvety. It grows in large washes and riparian canyons. |
