engelmannii Common Name: Cactus Apple, Engelmann's Pricklypear, Engelmann's Prickly Pear Flower Color: Yellow, salmon pink, orange, red Plant Type: Cactus, Shrub, Perennial Height: To 5 feet (1.5 m) tall Date Observed: April 23, 2005 & August 27, 2005 Notes: The solid-colored, 3-inch (7.6 cm) wide flowers open yellow and age to pink. The stem pads have 0 to 6, white (sometimes yellow) spines surrounded by a sparse ring of glochids per areole. Many spines have a dark base. The purple-red fruits are edible. |
