splendens Common Name: Ocotillo Flower Color: Red Plant Type: Shrub, Perennial, Deciduous Height: To 20 feet (6 m) tall Date Observed: April 26, 2003 Notes: The tubular flowers have 5 lobes and are 1 inch (2.54 cm) long. The flowers are clustered at the tips of long, narrow, spiny canes. The canes are leafless for much of the year, leafing out after rains. The leaves, when present, are green, oval, and alternate. The flowers attract hummingbirds and orioles. |
