Notes: The slender flower heads are up to 2 inches (5 cm) long and surrounded by spine-tipped bracts. The oblong-obovate leaves are pinnately-lobed with spiny teeth. It blooms from May to October and grows at elevations from 3000 to 7000 feet (914 to 2134 m) in foothill canyons, chaparral, or pine forests.
