Name: Opuntia aciculata Common Name: Chenille Pricklypear Flower Color: Red, orange, yellow Plant Type: Cactus, Shrub, Perennial Height: To 3 feet (0.9 m) tall Date Observed: April 22, 2006 & April 26, 2005 Notes: The large, usually red flowers have green stigma lobes and a cream to pink style and anther filaments. The spineless fruits ripen to a purplish red. The pads are dotted with spiny brown glochids. This introduced Texas cactus can escape cultivation here and be seen amidst native desert vegetation. |
