melitensis Common Name: Maltese Star-thistle, Tocolote, Tocalote Flower Color: Yellow Plant Type: Herb, Annual, Biennial Height: To 3 feet (91 cm) tall Date Observed: May 7, 2004 & April 9, 2004 Notes: The 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) wide flowers are surrounded by "cobwebby" bracts with 0.4 inch (1 cm) long, tan spines with reddish, pinnately spiny bases. The upper leaves are linear. The similar introduced weed C. solstitialis has longer, yellow spines. |
