Plants in the primarily North and South American arid region Cactus Family (Cactaceae) are succulent, perennial shrubs and trees with fleshy, cylindrical, spherical, or flat, pancake-shaped stems, vestigial and spirally alternate or completely absent leaves, flowers with numerous tepals (undifferentiated, identical-looking petals and sepals), and fleshy fruit with many seeds.
