Plants in the worldwide, but especially southeast Asian Bittersweet Family (Celastraceae) are perennial shrubs, trees, and vines with simple, alternate or opposite leaves, flowers with 0, 4, or 5 petals, 4 or 5 sepals, and 4 or 5 stamens, and fruit in the form of a capsule, berry, drupe, nutlet, or winged achene/samara.
