Plants in the worldwide, but especially temperate family Flax Family (Linaceae) are annual and perennial herbs and shrubs with usually alternate (rarely opposite or whorled), simple, sessile leaves, flowers with 4 or 5 petals, 4 or 5 sepals and a superior ovary, and capsular or fleshy fruit.
