(OS X AppleScripts are also available)
You can open any of these applications with Script Editor before running them to see exactly what they are supposed to do. Script Editor comes with your system software and it allows you to automate tasks on your computer using AppleScript.
Change Monitor Depth - 14 K
AppleScript applications which will automatically switch the monitor to 256 colors, thousands of colors, or millions of colors without having to open the Monitors and Sound control panel. Only works with Mac OS 8+. If you don't use Control Strip (which has these same options) then these are a very easy way to switch your monitor's color depth.
Drop Text Converters - 29 K
Drag and drop applications that automatically convert TEXT documents to various application text formats so that they then can be opened in the chosen application simply by double clicking. Just drag and drop a TEXT file or files onto one of the converters and they'll automatically be converted. This script does not support the drag and drop of folders, just documents. If you want to convert a whole folder full of documents, just open the folder, select all, and then drag the selected documents to the converter. The converters will convert text documents to AOL, BBEdit, AppleWorks, MS Word, SimpleText, or Tex-Edit format.
If you have Mac OS 8.5+ then download Drop Text Converters OS 8.5+ - 33 K
Empty Browser Cache - 31 K
Applications that automatically empty AOL's, Internet Explorer's, and/or Netscape Navigator's browser cache.
Quit the Finder - 6 K
An application that quits the Finder and then restarts it. Doing this can occasionally help restore fragmented system memory.
Start or Stop File Sharing - 9 K
Unlike the standard Mac versions (in the Apple Menu -> Automated Tasks folder), these two script applications have no annoying dialogs that you have to click. This allows the Start File Sharing script application to be placed in the Startup Items folder to automatically start File Sharing when your computer starts up. Also, my version of the Stop File Sharing application is conditional so it will not give you error messages if you accidentally try to stop file sharing when it's already off.
Unlock SimpleText - 9 K
A drag and drop application that converts Read Only SimpleText documents (ones with the newspaper icons) to editable SimpleText Documents. Many software Read Me's are Read Only SimpleText documents so you can't copy a web or e-mail address from them (frustrating!) With this application, you just drag and drop one or more of these type of documents onto it and it instantly changes them to editable form, while preserving the graphics and colored text of the original. Note, this script does not support the drag and drop of folders, just documents. If you want to convert a whole folder full of documents, just open the folder, select all, and then drag the selected documents onto the converter. I have an alias to this one in my Finder Pop Items Folder and I find it very useful.
If you have Mac OS 8.5+ then download Unlock SimpleText 8.5+ - 10 K
